Lot 134: EVER SO RARE ORIGINAL AS USED ON BOARD ASHTRAY FROM SS CAVINA FROM THE ELDERS AND FYFFES LINE

Very scarce find of an as used on board ship ashtray from the Elders and Fyffes Line shipping company. It is from the vessel the SS Cavina and stands 4" (10cm) high and shows on it the company emblem. Very rare find.

[On June 1st, 1917, the British steamer SS Cavina, on a voyage from Port Limon to Avonmouth with a cargo of bananas & logwood, was sunk by the German submarine U-88 (Walther Schwieger), 45 miles WxS of Fastnet. There were no casualties. Established in 1901 with a nominal capital of 150,000 pounds, Elders & Fyffes was a subsidiary of Elder Dempster of Liverpool but working capital was at first in short supply. Alfred Jones of Elder Dempster had supplied some, as had the London fruit distributors Fyffe, Hudson & Co. (hence the company title) and even the small Bristol stevedoring company C.J. King and Sons contributed, receiving in return the contracts to handle the discharge of fruit and the supply of tugs.]
